That saying has always sounded a bit selfish to me but I have to remember, the first mission of any business is to make money. You and I and the other 190 Million entrepreneurs on the Internet are here for one reason: to make money. Now, do I have a secondary reason? I want to tell people how God saved me and then changed my life, and how to better deal with daily challenges and achieve financial freedom. For now, let's talk about the money and the WHY we're willing to put in the hours it takes to build a successful home based business. You have your own set of "whys", and as I tell you mine, think about them and know that I have what it takes to help you get them.
Just a few of the things that are at the top of my list of "whys" are: I want to provide for my beautiful wife Laura and our 4 wonderful children; Halie, Kali, Kaycee and Wyatt. I've taught my children to appreciate what they have, to be generous to those not as fortunate as them and to treat all people, no matter what their financial status is, with respect. Now that they have those values implanted I want them to have the family life and the opportunities to succeed that I didn't have.

I was in my senior year of college in 1989 and by this time I had 3-5 Grand Mal seizures and 200-300 petit mal seizures per month and still carrying a full load of classes. When I began talking to recruiters who visited the campus, it was a rude awakening to find out that it was an unspoken rule that no one wanted to hire someone with epilepsy. It was then that I made the decision that the best option for a person with epilepsy was to work in a home-based business.
Oh, and I forgot to say one thing, two years prior to this I had lost my driving license because my brain decided to short circuit as I was driving around a curve and hit another truck head-on. After that, the State of Texas felt it that a bicycle would be my future method of transportation. Being an "all-around-good-guy" I didn't drive and rode my bicycle everywhere I needed to go so having my office down the hall was a luxury when it was 30 degrees and raining or snowing!
So my first home based business was the purchase of a home based collection service system and the franchise rights that came with it. My clientele were General Practitioners, Dentists, and one Veterinarian and, as all good salesmen at the time did, I felt it necessary to wear a suit and make a good first impression. That meant wearing a clean suit so when I left the house to do sales calls I would drape the suit bag (suit, shirt, shoes and tie included) over my backpack and ride to a large Professional Building, change into my suit, and begin my day. It was that routine, plus a couple of hundred seizures a month, that made me an easy target when the veterinarian said, come to a meeting and learn how to make additional income. He wouldn't tell me what it was although I really didn't care after the day I just had. It was that night I saw "The Amway Plan." I was on the front row and they started drawing those circles and talking about how I'd be a millionaire by the end of the year!
Time leveraging, exponential growth and the power of network marketing were subjects I studied in college. I understood the earnings potential that these types of businesses had but I was clueless as to the amount of work that went into building a large network.
So it was with total naivety that I could become a millionaire within a year's time but was hitching rides to every home, hotel, and out of town meeting I could make to show "the plan" only to have nobody home or have them, laughingly, say no thanks. I think it would be a good thing for any one thinking about going into sales to try person to person multi-level marketing the old fashioned way. Two things will happen. You will be a natural and maybe make a little money or figure out that sales may not be your best career choice. Either way, if you stay at it long, you will be better at handling rejection than you ever thought possible.
Well, after 6 years and thousands of dollars I had to admit defeat HOWEVER, following what my veterinarian leader told me I began listening to an audio cassette a day, usually a recording of various stories of successful Amway distributors and on success driven principles, and reading a positive mental attitude book every month. Then there were the "functions." These out of town meetings usually lasted 2-3 days and cost hundreds of dollars for us with little money to attend. Books, tapes, and functions. That was the Amway mantra but you know what, I benefited just as much, or more, from the University of Amway then I did the 5 years in college it took to get my college degree. It rivals the best college course in the world on personal self-growth and relationship building that I know of.
It is true that your income in this industry will never exceed your personal growth!
After doing EVERYTHING I was told to do by my well meaning up-lines and the company for 6 years, I almost went Direct Distributor twice. Once with my total group sales and once, embarrassingly I must say, with a big downline and still having to personally buy product needed to hit the next level. It was at that point I decided to put my business on hold so I could focus on finding a way to end my seizures. When I stopped the quest for the Amway fortune I looked back at what I had done. I had shown the Amway business plan to over 300 of my family, friends, and neighbors and was an official member of the NFL (No Friends Left) CLUB and didn't even know it! I almost did the friend, family and neighbors thing again a few months ago and stopped myself before I became a two-time NFL retiree. I continued to work my mentor(s) and I worked together in different programs where I gained even more experience that helps me today.
Now that you've heard of my prior MLM experience you may be asking, as my wife did, why did I tell you that I didn't make it. The main reasons are one; to let you know that I've blazed a trail for you saving you from making some costly and embarrassing mistakes and two; is because many of you who reading this have suffered the same costly mistakes and are still hurting from them and asking yourself, "do I want to do this AGAIN?"
The good news is this time you don't have to join the NFL Club AGAIN.
This time when someone asks you what you do you can tell them you're in the E-Commerce and Internet Marketing business. You own a book store, a computer software store and your building is your computer and you have a sales force of 1,100 or 10,000 independent sales people. That's all dependent on you! Take ITV Ventures™ for example. You won't see the dreaded statement, "make a list of your friends, family, and neighbors." And you have world class mentors and a power-performing team are with you.
Most people understand the store analogy but they'll usually make a comment about the 'independent sales force.' Hopefully, it's positive but sometimes you'll get a comment like - 'sounds like a pyramid to me or so and so got into something like that and it never worked.' What people are starting to understand however is that the Internet is changing the way we do business. The 'sounds like a pyramid' comment will undoubtedly come out and when it does give whoever the uninformed person is the explanation no one can deny. The ultimate network building story is how Jesus took 12 men and turned them out into the world and spread the gospel of Christ to billions of people around the globe.

Part of my story includes being touched by His grace. Before I found God, I would fight you as soon as look at you, if there was a party I was the first there and the last to leave and when you saw a cop speed by he was usually after me. Without His grace I would not be here today to be a husband, raise my children, enjoy my animals or help you become successful. I owe Him everything I have and it is because of Him that I developed the sincere belief that all people should be treated with dignity and you can learn from all people. It may be positive or it may be negative but you will learn.
This leads me to this question; are you tired of looking for the Internet or Network Marketing business and failing over and over again? Something needs to change right? I heard statistics that say there are 800 million people on the internet right now and 198 million of them are trying to make a home-based business a success because they are not making a living with a 9-5 job. But the problem is that only 2% of them really succeed.
